It’s a problem because nerve cells cannot divide anymore. This means if you lose even one neurone, there is no replacement. So maintaining a healthy viable neurone population in the brain is very important.

If apoptosis occurs on brain neurones, the brain’s function and structure deteriorate. This results in most of the neurodegenerative diseases we know.
